plasma TV Pioneer PDP-LX5090

50-inch ‘HD Ready 1080p’ KURO (9th Generation)

'KURO' means black in Japanese.
But not just any black. Perfect black.
And in the television world, black is everything. Black encompasses the entire spectrum of colour. The deepest black levels produce the purest colours and the sharpest details.
Achieving the blackest blacks imaginable and building a screen that produces the absolute best picture quality in the world was the inspiration and driving force behind our newest flat screen TV.
KURO lets you see literally every shade between black and white; the most vivid and flawless colours.
The PDP-LX5090, one of our latest KURO TVs, is just 93mm thin and has an integrated digital terrestrial tuner. In short, KURO is a television that will let you see and hear like never before.

Like never before
Go beyond. Immerse yourself in a world where colours can be felt, sounds can be tasted and it all comes together to create something unlike anything that has ever existed. And nothing will be the same again.

Motion
KURO has grown out of our passion for the art form of the moving picture. Regardless of what you are watching – of how fast (or slow) the image is moving on screen, or how the lighting conditions on the actual video image change, you’ll see even the smallest details and the finest nuances in the best possible resolution.

Contrast
Contrast ratio answers the question of how black blacks can get on a flat screen television. The blacker the blacks, the better the colours and the more realistic the image appears on screen. KURO flat screen TVs display the deepest black levels possible because extreme contrast is at the very heart of the KURO concept.

Colour
KURO flat screen TVs accurately reproduce red, green and blue with smooth, delicate gradations - even in the darkest film scenes. By accuracy, we mean that the picture you see on screen is as true to the original as possible. What you see is clear and accurate. Every time.

Black levels
To create the deepest blacks in a flat screen TV, it is necessary to create a world completely absent of colour or light reflection. We have succeeded in further reducing the idling luminance and improving black levels to a depth far greater than ever thought possible. The result is a picture that possesses finer detail, greater contrast and richer colours – the reference in flat screen televisions.

In the television world, black is everything.
Since black encompasses the entire spectrum of colour, the ability to produce the deepest blacks results in the ability to generate the richest colours.
KURO flat screen TVs create black tones of such depth and purity that every detail, every colour, every shade comes brilliantly alive.

KURO means black
KURO means black in Japanese. Only the deepest levels of black can serve as a backdrop for the purest, most vibrant colours. And for detail with the most striking sharpness.
That’s why we’ve dedicated our energy to achieving blacks of unprecedented intensity; enabling you to see the deepest shades of black and the best picture possible.
When you cross the line and step into the world of KURO, you enter a new sensory space. Our highly sophisticated viewing solutions create a total experience that will change your perception of home entertainment forever.

Pristine quality.
With KURO, you can be sure that everything is processed in flawless quality. All KURO flat screen TVs and projectors are Full HD ‘HD ready 1080p’ and offer the ultimate picture performance.

Whatever you’re watching
Whether you’re watching a high-voltage action scene or a panoramic landscape view, KURO reproduces exceptionally clear and noise-free images.
Regardless of how fast (or slow) the image is moving on screen, or how the lighting conditions on the actual video image change, you’ll see even the smallest details and the finest nuances in the best possible resolution.

KURO contrast
‘Contrast ratio’ is perhaps the most confusing concept in the flat screen TV market, as most manufacturers measure it differently. But the most important thing to understand is that contrast ratio answers the question of how black blacks can get on a flat screen television.
The blacker the blacks, the better the colours and the more realistic the image appears on screen. KURO flat screen TVs display the deepest black levels possible because extreme contrast is at the very heart of the KURO concept.

Master quality cinema
Films are typically shot and encoded for cinema reproduction at 1080p and 24 frames per second. High definition discs, like Blu-ray, offer you access to ‘true to the original’ films.
KURO flat screen TVs and projectors are compatible with the 1080p/24 signals from Blu-ray players, which means that the latest in high definition video is within your reach.

What the experts say
Hear from the filmmakers – the cinematographers, the editors, the directors – how important black levels are in truly appreciating the art and emotion of film.

Complete connectivity. Total control. With a KURO flat screen TV, you’re perfectly equipped to receive digital-quality TV broadcasts. Every KURO not only features an integrated analogue tuner, but also a digital terrestrial (DVB-T) tuner for digital terrestrial TV reception.
Three to four HDMI inputs enable you to connect your KURO to your Blu-ray player, home cinema system or AV receiver with a single cable.
The top-of-the-line KURO TVs are DLNA (Digital Living Network Alliance) certified. This means they can simply be integrated into a home or local area network and play content such as music or photos from one or more connected media servers. This media content is directly available through the plasma’s Home Media Gallery function, nicely integrated in a new, modern-looking Graphical User Interface (GUI).
KURO LINK guarantees easy operation. It lets you control the main functions of compatible Pioneer equipment with the TV’s remote control.

Enhanced optimum mode
With their Enhanced Optimum Mode, KURO plasma TVs actively sense the light conditions, analyse the viewing content and fine-tune the TV accordingly, ensuring that the picture you see is as perfect as it can be. In addition, the audio is harmonised with the programme being watched. All KURO plasma TVs with separate media receiver come with an additional colour sensor that measures the colour characteristics of ambient light to provide the picture optimum to your eye’s sensation.

Backlight adjustment and ambient light sensor
To enhance black levels even further, KURO LCD TVs incorporate an automatic backlight adjustment function and an ambient light sensor.
By using advanced image processing to monitor the brightness of each video frame the backlight adjustment function adjusts the backlight intensity accordingly, creating seamless transitions with deep blacks and increased detail. The ambient light sensor optimises on-screen images according to the brightness of the room.

Intelligent brightness control
The Intelligent Brightness Control in KURO plasma TVs optimally adjusts your on-screen picture according to the brightness in your living environment, ensuring that what you see is at its absolute best, regardless of whether it’s dark or bright in the room.

Home Gallery
Reliving your favourite footage or enjoying someone else's work of art has never been so much fun, particularly on the big screen. Pioneer's Home Gallery (JPEG Picture Viewer) allows you to relish high resolution images direct from a variety of sources including digital cameras and most memory cards* such as PC Card Type II, Memory Stick, SD Card, CompactFlash, MMC and SmartMedia. Supporting a JPEG resolution of 2400 x 1800 (4.3 million) pixels, means you can dazzle family and friends with magnificent shots in exuberant colours. By simply inserting the memory card, you can easily view your own personal, high resolution digital images or enjoy original digital art images from the optional Pioneer 'Home Gallery Collection' software.

Power Consumption

Caring for the environment is important. It's why we are a Sustainable Energy Partner of the European Commission.
What this means is that we've committed to reduce power consumption in standby modes. The less energy we consume, the better for the environment.

Signal Processing Drive 2HD
Achieving the best overall picture quality is part of Pioneer’s strategy. PURE DRIVE 2HD offers full digital image processing without numerous intermediate analogue-to-digital and digital-to-analogue conversions, which cause undesirable noise effects and decreased video quality.
PURE Drive 2HD digital video processing incorporates the latest developments to optimise image quality for plasma display technology. Every Circuit within the video processing circuit has been newly designed for integration with the superior PureBlack panel. The most important picture improvement technologies are further explained in the next chapters.

True Matrix Imaging with Deep Waffle Rib Structure

The sun shines brighter on Pure Vision Pioneer Plasma TV, thanks to True Matrix Imaging. Pioneer's exclusive technology works like this: the Deep Waffle-shaped Rib Structure increases the area of light-emitting phosphors —increasing the brightness. Each plasma cell is deeper, encapsulated with horizontal ribs, so emitted light won't leak into neighbouring cells. This deep cell structure means higher brightness. When one million tiny coloured fluorescent lamps fire at once, viewers will experience full-on, pure colour intensity.

i-CLEAR Drive

i-CLEAR Drive efficiently uses the performance of new multi bit digital video processors increasing the range of gradation levels, to reproduce the most subtle colour differences.
Pictures are constantly monitored and analysed in 100Hz mode, and, depending on the video signal information, more gradation steps will be flexibly allocated were required. Especially darker picture areas are enhanced.
Pioneer plasmas display the richest details with the most natural colours. Up to you to discover them.

Dynamic HD Converter

PURE Vision Plasma is outfitted with a Dynamic HD Converter that changes interlaced PAL signals into progressive 1280 x 768 pixel signals (1024 x 768 with the 43-inch models). To optimise one pixel, this system scans the surrounding 84 pixels to create smoother, sharper and clearer images.
Active Dynamic Range Expander (DRE)
The Dynamic Range Expander enhances full spectrum of colour tones after making a real time analysis of the complete Video frames. Pictures are continuously adjusted in order to make optimal use of the panel’s superior contrast range.
To accomplish this, several technologies work together:
1)The “Dynamic range correction” adjusts video dynamically by expanding distribution of the unused histogram.
2)The “Peak Automatic Contrast Limiter” checks peak level of the total image, and adjust contrast scale accordingly. The enhanced peak brightness reproduces shining pictures.
3)“Black level expansion” reproduces better black level contrast by displaying the finest gradation when expanding black levels.
4)Finally the “Shade rendering engine” automatically optimises contrast of shaded image parts.
Result? CLEAR and Natural images with SHARP CONTRAST and DETAILS in the dark areas of the picture.

DIgital Flicker-Free

Tired eyes from tiny flickers on Tv finally a thing of the past. Pioneer's innovative progressive scan drive scan all 580 lines in 1/50 second and constructs a complete frame. In addition to progressive scanning, Pioneer has developed a new digital method to prevent flicker. Although 100 Hz scanning is considered to deliver the best result, false contours might appear in some scenes. The new Pioneer Digital Flicker-Free technology completely eradicates flicker and false contour, ensuring that every image is of the utmost quality.

Block Noise Reduction

PURE Vision Plasma TV's feature two types of noise reduction systems: Digital Noise Reduction and MPEG Noise Reduction, together they feature as Dual Noise Reduction.
Exclusive Digital Noise Reduction minimises picture noise correctly for the highest image quality. Compared to conventional digital noise reduction systems that mistake tricky elements from the original source, such as a shooting star trail, Pioneer's Digital Noise Reduction controls these mistakes at the base level to reproduce images faithful to the original.
MPEG Noise Reduction reduces mosquito noise unique to MPEG compressed video images, an especially useful function when viewing digital satellite broadcasting.

Pure Cinema
When the video signal originates from a film source, there's a 2-2 pull-down detection, exactly the same image procedure as in the theatre. This determines the regularity of repeated fields and detects the original film frames. Pioneer's exclusive Plasma technology 'Advanced PureCinema' boosts the refresh rate on the TV to 75 Hz to ensure that images retain higher resolution on the Plasma for the same quality reproduction level as in the theatre.

Sound Options
To create a completely mesmerising sound and image experience, PURE Vision employs three specific types of audio enhancement technology: SRS*, TruBass* and FOCUS*.
WOW* designates a status where the FOCUS is on and TruBass + SRS has been selected for Front Surround. It dramatically improves the quality, dynamics, image field size, and bass tones of digitally compressed audio file formats, like WMA, WAV and MP3.
TruBass* enhances the lower bass tone sensation, taking it beyond the natural low frequency capabilities of the speaker itself.
SRS* Reproduces highly effective threedimensional sound.
FOCUS* elevates the frontal sound field above the actual stereo speaker location. This produces fabulous sound when the speakers are located under the screen.

i/o Link.A
Integrating audio visual equipment with your Plasma TV has never been easier or more secure. i/o Link A connects the Multimedia Receiver simply to any other A/V device. It offers a host of useful control functions including One-Touch Play, System Standby, Preset Download and WYS/WYR (What You See is What You Record).

SR+
When this PURE Vision Plasma TV is linked to a Pioneer A/V receiver equipped with an SR+ interface, receiver status and controls, such as volume, surround mode, MCACC adjustment status, and sound field parameters, are displayed on the Plasma TV screen. This way, users have total control of their complete home cinema system settings.
